The proposed changes would require a high level of investment to adapt our roads and more specifically, our terminals where road would shift to rail, or ship would shift to road… Bridges, pavement and parkings, tunnel curve and gauge adjustments or level rail crossing adjustments.
How much will this really cost? Who will pay the price?
- Roughly 4 in 10 European CT terminals would struggle to host EMS “megatrucksˮ today—on access, maneuvering (turns), or parking—unless layouts are adapted.
- That maps to on the order of ~350–400 terminals across Europe.
Without adequate infrastructure, the directive risks creating bottlenecks rather than solutions.
It is not about diminishing the importance of Zero Emission Vehicles to reach our climate objectives, nor about hindering change.
It is about ensuring that the proposed changes do not hinder the very real solutions that have already received significant public investments.
